(16 November 2007) Human settlements require development strategies for equity, growth and sustainability, and these must applied within a participatory and democratic processes of municipal administration.
This is the topic of a five-day series of activities on "Sustainable Cities in Latin America and the Caribbean: Policies, Strategies and Instruments" to be held from 19 to 23 November at Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) headquarters in Santiago, Chile (Raúl Prebisch Conference Room, Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura).
The activities are being organized by ECLAC; the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MINVU) of Chile and its Neighborhood Recovery Programme; the German Cooperation Agency GTZ; the Network of Authorities for Environmental Management in Latin American and Caribbean Cities; the municipal government of Curitiba, Brazil; and the Chilean Association of Municipalities.
The event begins with the 6th Seminar of the Network of Authorities for Environmental Management in Latin American and Caribbean Cities, to be inaugurated Monday, 19 November at 9:00 a.m. by Ricardo Jordán, Economic Affairs Officer in the ECLAC Division of Sustainable Development and Human Settlements; José Andreguetto, Network president and representative of the Curitiba municipal government; Julio Palestra, Vice-President of the Chilean Association of Municipalities; and Iván Moscoso, Secretary-General of the Network
On Tuesday, 20 November at 9:00 a.m., the Ibero-American Forum of Experiences with Neighborhood Recovery will be inaugurated by Laura López, Secretary of the Commission of ECLAC; Lutz Drewski, GTZ representative; and Paulina Saball, Deputy Secretary of Chile's Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Participants will discuss management policies, strategies and programmes for the sustainable development of cities and will share experiences from around the region. Special emphasis will be given to projects on neighborhood recovery and improvement.
The objective is to discuss proposals, methodological advances and results achieved by diverse governmental agencies and institutions in their efforts to promote dialogue and improve public policies in this area.
